About Eric Michaelsen, DOM
Eric Michaelsen is a Doctor of Oriental Medicine practicing in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Originally from Michigan, he graduated from Kalamazoo College with dual degrees in English and Japanese before accepting a post with Teach For America in New Orleans. While in Louisiana, he became acquainted with Vietnamese-style acupuncture, which led him to pursue formal study.
Eric's style of acupuncture is based in Japanese Meridian Therapy and incorporates sotai and Japanese-style herbal diagnosis. He believes deeply in the role of advanced study and can often be found reading or attending workshops to hone his skill. His teachers include T. Koei Kuwahara and he has studied in the style of Shudo-Sensei as well. He is the Program Director of the High Desert Hari Society, a non-profit whose mission is the transmission and preservation of traditional medicine. Additionally, he provides translations and, more rarely, articles for the North American Journal of Oriental Medicine.
Eric has had success with patient relief in a variety of conditions including sciatica, low back pain, plantar fasciitis, allergies (seasonal and mold), the common cold, fibromyalgia, emotional imbalances, and chronic and autoimmune conditions such as Lyme, IBS, and hypothyroid.
In his free time, Eric is a cyclist, hiker, coffee drinker, hi-fi enthusiast, sauna addict, and cinephile and can usually be found trying to shoehorn as many of those into one day as possible.
The name "Anshin"
Anshin is named after the Japanese word for security and peace of mind, meaning literally an "easy heart." Eric uses painless, super-shallow needle insertion as well as non-insertive needles for most of his treatments, emphasizing a goal of an easy-going connection between patient and practitioner.
